Is it true that the large crater that can be found surrounded by trees, at the top of Grange Farm, on the way to Hazlemere, was caused by a War plane crashing?

Click here to see where I mean on Streetmap.

There is a WW2 crash site in Prestwood at the location of the Hildreths Garden Centre; there is a commemorative plaque on the wall.

Not sure whether this is the same location as you stated, will look into it.

I thought the crater was a bomb crater ??? I used to play there in the 80's as a kid.

I think that there is also a crash site/bombing to the north of Little Kingshill in the wood, on the way to Sedges Farm

I have a report that mentions that in 1982, a group carried out an excavation to find a Hampden bomber, and that 'bits of the bomber and crew were recovered'. The report puts the location at the north edge of Cockshoot Wood to the west of Grange Farm.

Chris is right. A bomber did go down there and that area has not been farmed since (the farmer at the time felt it would be like desecrating a grave to touch the land). That is why it has a completely differend eco system (different plants, insects etc) than the rest of the field around it. The crater en route to Hazlemere, and the one in fromt of Brands House are indeed bomb craters.
